The Importance of Mentors in the Learning Process

By Simon 7 years ago

Teacher/student is a natural relationship. Even though there are plenty of useful learning tools on the internet, this particular experience isn’t available online yet – and, I want to fill that void.

My experience with one-on-one learning goes all the way back to my childhood. I was home-schooled until I was 14, and that will always be an incredibly valuable experience to me. When you have someone to guide you through the learning process, offering advice that caters to you personally, you’re more receptive. It’s a much more effective learning process.

As an adult, I went on to have business mentors, who helped me achieve my professional goals. Their one-on-one guidance offered me the support I needed to get to develop my business. In creating Guruumee, I wanted to offer that same experience to others, in an accessible and convenient format. A mobile app provides users with access to one-on-one mentoring that allows them learn just about anything and work towards almost any goal.

Mentors are hugely valuable because don’t just teach you new things; they push you towards your goals in many ways that you’re not even really aware of. When you spend some time every week with an expert in a field that you’re passionate about, you pick up on all sorts of behaviour and habits, and you don’t even realise it until you’re putting them to use to better your own life.

In fact, everyone you interact with rubs off on you. Whenever you make a new friend or start dating a new person, you influence each other in a myriad of ways. You pick up some of their vocabulary, they develop similar taste in music. It’s inevitable and, in the case of experts and mentors, it’s always positive.

W.E.B. Dubois said “children learn more from what you are than what you teach”. This principle lies at the heart of Guruumee, and I want users to get the most out of learning with experts who can guide them towards their goals by teaching, influencing and motivating.
